Mascots

Several consortia have started circulating a stuffed mascot around their courier systems and this seems like a fun activity to showcase our units, libraries, and campuses. If your consortia mascot appears in your courier bag or mailroom please take a picture with the mascot with something unique about your library. This can be a selfie, group shot, or a picture of just the mascot in your library. Examples of unique things to showcase include pictures with:

  • Interesting displays
  • Special collections items
  • Artwork
  • Cool Tech
  • Makers Space
  • ILL department
  • Oddball Librarian (with permission)

After you take the picture you should email the photo(s) to I-SPIE to get it added to the site and shown on I-SPIE TV. Then send the mascot to the next library by the end of the week. We want her to visit 1 library per week. The I-SPIE blog will be updated with the mascot's adventures.

Be aware, other library system's mascots may also begin to travel outside their home library routes...

Cali the Bear

Cali is a curious young bear who was rescued from a southern California Von's grocery store where she was busy eating all the new Blueberry Pie Oreos. With her love of sugar, and her distinct lack of fear of humans, it was clear she wasn't a good fit for life in the wild. She was officially rescued by the CSU I-SPIE group and adopted as a mascot for the CSU Resource Sharing program in 2025.

This lovable bear has always dreamed of travel and meeting new people. Her human companion in Long Beach saw she was not happy simply staying at the CSU Office of the Chancellor. To help Cali realize her dreams, I-SPIE TV leadership gave her permission to visit all the CSU campuses. Cali jumped for joy at the news, but she not so secretly hopes to someday visit libraries beyond the CSU...

With her new purpose (and a steady supply of Oreos), Cali travels the around California using the CSU courier. If you are lucky enough to come across Cali, please take a picture of her in your Resource Sharing unit or with something unique to your library or campus! She wants to see all the cool things there are to see in the CSU

Pascal the Bookworm

Pascal the bookworm began his education in Library Science as a humble “worm-worker” under the watchful guidance of the PASCAL consortium’s Systems Librarian.  Though diligent and detail-oriented, the Librarian often caught Pascal gazing longingly out the window, his tiny glasses fogging up with wanderlust.  Recognizing that great talent should never be shushed, the Librarian sprang into action; a new staff position was created on the spot!

Pascal eagerly accepted his promotion to Official Mascot of PASCAL Delivers, the consortium’s statewide resource sharing service, and promptly wriggled his way into hearts via a never-ending state-wide circuit of South Carolina academic libraries.  From coastal campuses to the mountain foothills, he became a sought-after guest, spreading the word about access services and resource sharing. #WhereIsPASCAL became his tagline, and everyone waited excitedly to see where he would pop up next!

But little worms have big dreams, and Pascal has set his sights on something new.  Thanks to expanding resource sharing partnerships between the PASCAL consortium and libraries across the country, Pascal is going national!  Now on his first extended sabbatical, he’s taking his curiosity and sense of adventure to libraries across the country, seeking out new friends who enjoy long soliloquys on the importance of access and sharing.

Pascal loves to take selfies, but unfortunately has no thumbs.  If he visits your library, be a pal —snap a photo with him using the hashtag #PascalGoesNational and share it with the PASCAL team to ensure that every friend back in South Carolina can admire his adventures (and be appropriately jealous as well).
